Community Connections at Cedar Hills Baptist Church |
Thanks to everyone who attended the first Community Connections meal at Cedar Hills Baptist Church on May 17th! It was a great evening of getting to know new neighbors and friends, and finding out about the common resources and concerns the people of Cedar Hills share. About 80 people attended and from what I've heard so far, people enjoyed themselves and sensed the evening was productive.
While enjoying dinner, attenders had the opportunity to get acquainted and discuss issues that are important to our community. We each learned a lot about what's already offered locally and what we can do to strengthen our community and people.
So what's next?
The hope with Community Connections is simply to link people, resources and organizations (schools, churches, businesses, social services, recreation centers, etc) in our community who are already doing good things. By linking us all, we can combine efforts and concerns, not duplicate them. So what happens next is to continue to find out how we can link our efforts and resources in the most effective ways.
Several attenders completed a short form that asked about interest in future Community Connections events and ways they might like to help. Responses are being collated and I'll be updating this blog with some of the common concerns; those who wish to be contacted will be contacted before the end of May. In June, we will discuss possible plans for future Community Connections gatherings.
Thanks to the community leaders who shared news about their organizations. The leaders included:
- Ridgewood Elementary School - Scot Stockwell, Principal
- National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) - Laura O'Neil, Executive Director
- Cedar Hills Recreation Center - Kristin Farber, Rec Mobile Coordinator
- E-Net Employment seekers network - Peter Van Houten, Coordinator
- Homes Association of Cedar Hills - Mark Swan, President
- Cedar Hills United Church of Christ - Rev. Mary Sue Evers, Pastor
- St. Andrew Lutheran Church - Rev. Mark Brocker
- Cedar Hills Baptist Church - Rev. Curtis Buthe
Along with a large assortment of home made soups and fresh baked bread, we had some wonderful Pino Grigio Chicken and Risotto Rice provided by The Grape Vine, a new local restaurant.
Stay tuned for more information about upcoming Community Connections events!
